Psychotherapist / Counsellor

Catering for a range of issues from self-esteem, anxiety, depression, communication issues, relationship issues and psychosexual issues to name a few. I particularly like to work with past or childhood trauma within the adult today. I provide a unique style of therapy drawing from a background in early childhood education and care, additional needs and integrative psychotherapy.

Michelle Fowler, BA (Hons), M.Sc. (Hons)

I am an approachable, non-judgemental, warm and understanding therapist, fully-accredited with IACP. Having faced adversity myself throughout life, I understand what it is like to sit in the clients chair for counselling. I work with individuals and couples of 18 years and over, both face to face and online. If you would like me to work with you, I am a happy to help.

“I am an integrative therapist, meaning that, depending on the needs of each
person, I tailor-make a therapy plan for each unique situation at hand. I am a
collaborative therapist, meaning that I work closely with my clients through
discussing, explaining and psycho educating in order to meet their needs and help them achieve their goals. “

My Approach & Philosophy

I would like to share the story of the dandelion gone to seed in my branding. When I was very little, my granny used to take me for a walk through the park on our way to the village to get the days shopping. She would tell me to pick the seed head of the dandelion, or ‘Jinny Joe,’ as we called it, and blow hard to disperse all the seeds and make a wish. As I did so, my wish was always the same…. to spend as much time as possible with my granny.

I loved to watch the seeds blow away and noticed how perfectly balanced they were on the wind, drifting lazily away until I could no longer see them. Every time I went to stay with my granny, I believed my wish had been granted. As an adult, I now know that life is not so simplistic, that life can be fraught with all kinds of difficulty that blowing on a Jinny Joe cannot fix. Though the wish to change my life sometimes remains the same.

I always picture myself blowing away the seeds of the Jinny Joe when I wish I could change something about my life, and just before I put my plan together to make that change. I feel that choosing to go to therapy is a conscious wish to change, and in that way is similar to wanting a wish to come true. Though this is a wish that with the non-judgemental, understanding and experienced support of a therapist, can actually happen. We can begin to achieve satisfaction within ourselves and our place in life.

I can honestly say that attending therapy myself over the years has been my saving grace. Now I am an integrative psychotherapist. Working with children in the past and studying in this field has afforded me the opportunity to see where issues begin in childhood. Working and studying in the area of additional needs, I realised that there is more than one way to think, feel and communicate, even when clients are non-verbal.

A certain look or gesture goes a long way toward saying what someone means. I realise also that issues, or trauma, beginning in childhood can persist into adulthood if unresolved. They can erode our self-esteem, ability to interact and communicate well, and cause trouble for us in all of our relationships.

Types of Therapy

Therapy Styles

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Transactional Analysis Therapy, Inner Child Therapy. Internal Family Systems Therapy.

A combination of these styles of therapy may be used to treat your issues depending on the individual and the unique situation that you find yourself in. A tailormade therapy just for you!

(Specialising in) Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma can be a lack of emotional support, lack of understanding, communication issues, estrangement from family members or extended family, neglect, abuse, isolation, or a multitude of causes. Unresolved childhood trauma within the adult presents itself as flashbacks, anger, anxiety, emotional disturbance or outbursts,
depression, anxiety, panic attacks, self-destructive behaviour or risky
behaviour, withdrawal or even complete numbness and
unresponsisveness. These issues can cause disturbance within
relationships. If you are affected by unresolved trauma, therapy can help.

Suicidal Ideation Therapy

Sometimes our problems feel so big or out of hand that ending it all by killing ourselves feels like the only answer when we can’t see any solution ourselves. Sometimes we may feel that we have no one to talk to about our problems because we don’t trust anyone or because we don’t want to feel like a burden on anyone else when their lives are probably already filled with stress without adding our issues to it all. However, this leaves an already emotionally overwhelmed mind feeling completely alone, with no one to turn to. This is precisely the moment when suicidal thoughts may enter our minds and seem like the only way out. There is help though! Therapy can help. If this is you, talking to someone who is well trained and unbiased can help to get clarity on how we feel, why we feel this way and what we would like to do about it. Healthy life plans can be put in place that are both easy to follow and make sense once we begin to understand what has been happening for us in the first place.

Bereavement Therapy

Bereavement affects us in many ways. It isn’t always caused by the death of a loved one. It can be caused by family estrangement, breaking up with a partner or the ending of a close friendship. No matter why we feel bereaved, the symptoms of loneliness, sadness, anxiety, depression, unease and feeling lost in general can be common. Losing someone we trust, love and were close to can cause emotional upheaval that it is sometimes hard to put words together to describe. If this sounds like you, therapy can help.

Relational Issues Therapy

Relational trauma can be caused by an emotionally unstable environment where basic emotional needs were never met. This can leave us as adults feeling that we are overly dependant or co-dependant on others, especially in our intimate relationships. We may be needy, or crave the attention of others all the time. We can feel helpless or powerless to understand or control these feelings and feel a general sense of powerlessness in life. We can also feel that it is difficult to maintain healthy relationships or feel drawn to unhealthy ones, leaving us feeling taken advantage of, or feeling like a doormat. Experiencing a whirlwind of emotions from anger to deep upset is also common. If this is you, therapy can help.

Couples Therapy

With couples therapy it is important that each partner gets a chance to air how they feel within the relationship about what is working or not working presently and where they want to go from here. Many issues can stem from each partners childhood issues and family values causing conflict within the relationship today. Couples issues can be anything from communication difficulties, emotional issues, sexual issues, or simple misunderstandings that talking things through with an understanding therapist can help resolve. If you need support within your relationship, therapy can help.

Psychosexual Therapy

Psychosexual issues can be physically, emotionally and psychologically painful to live with. These issues are difficult and maybe overwhelming for the partner directly affected and usually caused by past sexual trauma that is unresolved. These issues can lead to that partner feeling at fault for intimacy issues within their relationship. Therapy can help to understand this trauma, process it and work through it using specialised therapeutic techniques. If you have similar issues, therapy can help.

Catering for Autism Spectrum in Therapy

People on the spectrum can often feel misunderstood. I work with autism through cognitive behavioural therapy to help with behavioural, emotional and social issues and thought patterns. I help with anxiety, processing thoughts and feelings and developing healthy communication. I also have a back garden with flowers and trees to spend time in if the client needs a breather. If you are on the spectrum and need support, or if you are caring for someone with autism and you need support, therapy can help.

Emotional Unstable Personality Disorder

EUPD involves an overwhelming fear of abandonment. You will usually experience intense anxiety, paranoia or distrust of others, dissociation, irritability and mood swings that can lead you to feel as if you have lost all control of your thoughts and emotions. This may lead to isolation and loneliness. You may even feel suicidal or may self harm. If this is you, therapy can help.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Therapy

OCD involves anything from compulsive handwashing, counting, checking, organisation an arranging, to other repetative behaviours, usually accompanied by intrusive and negative or frightening thoughts, images or urges. Anxiety and distress connected to these thoughts and urges may push you to continue your repetative behaviours and the cycle begins again. If you need help to face your fears, thoughts and anxieties without repeating or acting on your compulsions, therapy can help.

Addiction and Cross Addiction Therapy

There can be many reasons for addiction and cross addiction, from a family history of addiction, childhood trauma, stress, boredom, peer pressure, socio-economic background, to mental health issues. Whatever the cause and whatever the addiction, you may be affected by negative emotional and behavioural changes, mood swings, lashing out, and possibly even personality change. All other relationships can be affected from these personal changes. If you or a family member are affected in any of these ways through addiction, therapy can help.

Low mood and Depression Therapy

Low mood can make you feel that you don’t want to go out today, or can leave you feeling unmotivated in general. You may feel a lack of joy in your life or notice that what once made you happy no longer does anymore. Depression can prevent you from holding down a job, or from funtioning fully within your relationships. You may feel sad, empty, hopeless, angry, have control issues and may feel that you lack direction in general. Depression may leave you feeling stuck in an unending cycle of despair. If you are affected by any or all of these symptoms therapy can help.

Self-esteem Therapy

Self-esteem issues or low self worth can affect you in many ways. You may not believe you are worthy of good friends, healthy relationships with family and partners and may take the role of scapegoat a lot. You may have negative thoughts about yourself or your life in general. You may have negative body image, low confidence, negative social comparison, self-doubt, fear of failure, lack of boundaries or you may be a people pleaser, forgetting to look after your own needs. However your esteem issues affect you, therapy can help.

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety takes many forms. Social anxiety for example, or fear of people you do not know, or of large crowds, can prevent you from making new connections and from maintaining the relationships you already have, leaving you isolated. Anxiety can occur with exam pressure, running a household on low income, from abuse, or from the death of a loved one. Sometimes you may not know why you are anxious. However, your anxiety started, and however it affects you today, therapy can help.

Communication Issues Therapy

Healthy communication is of course, a key element of all of our interactions on a daily basis. In order to communicate well, we must first understand what it is we want to say and why we want to say it. We must also understand that others’ perception or understanding of what we say may be different to what we actually mean. This is why we must learn to understand how what we have said has landed with whomever we have said it to. Do they understand what we mean? Do we need to rephrase or clarify? Do we need clearer explanation or clarification from others too? Therapy can help.

Meet Michelle

I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation to help you get a feel for what therapy would be like for you. During this consultation, you can tell me your issues and I can give you an idea of the styles of therapy I can offer you to suit your particular situation and how they would work in therapy. Appointments and directions can be organised then also.
